ROOFING PRODUCTS MANUFACTURING PLANT
Ontario, Canada
Casing Diameter: 7 inches
Elevation: 15 feet
Rate per hour: 2 tons
Material: Silica Sand
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
A manufacturer of roofing products (asphalt shingles and tar paper) sought to replace an existing bucket elevator used to return overspill sand to a tar paper coating line. Their existing bucket elevator suffered from frequent breakdowns resulting in an unacceptable amount of lost production time.
The plant operates 24 hours per day, 7 days per week and has two 1-week scheduled plant shutdowns per year. Since 100% of the plants’ production of tar paper is pre-sold any loss of production time results directly in lost revenue and profit.
The bucket elevator was removed and an Olds elevator was installed in January 2012. It has since operated for every minute of the plant’s production time requiring no maintenance or service in over 3 years. An inspection of the Olds elevator wear components was carried out after 2 years and 9 months and no significant wear was measured. Since installation, this elevator has conveyed over 50,000 tons of sand without showing any signs of wear.
