How the Olds Elevator™ Works

An Olds elevator is a new class of bulk material elevator that provides metered mass flow for your product with only one moving part in contact with the material.

A tubular casing with attached intake scoops rotates around a static screw. (See Fig. 1)

Generous clearance is provided between the static screw and the casing. This clearance is an important feature that prevents product damage, casing wear and metal-on-metal contact.

Your bulk material in the feed hopper typically covers the intake scoops. The Olds elevator self-feeds at a controlled rate as it rotates.

Friction against the inner wall of the casing rotates your material and causes product resting on the screw flight to move gently up the inclined face of the screw in mass flow.

Benefits:
  • Mass flow of materials maximizes “transport” (operational) efficiency by avoiding the back-flow or “leakage” of other methods.

  • The full-bore flow helps to stabilize the static screw, preventing casing contact. No hanger bearings are needed. In fact all of the bearings can be external, eliminating issues of bearing-to-product contact.

  • With no seals or bearings at the discharge, the elevator is well suited to handling difficult, hot, abrasive or corrosive bulk materials.

  • The elevator’s gentle handling of your product avoids dust generation, and its mass flow excludes air needed to generate dust explosions. Additionally, by providing an inherent explosion barrier or choke, it can add safety to your system.

  • The intake scoops provide a positive, controlled input of material that is proportional to casing speed. Thus the elevator serves as a volumetric feeder for any flow rate between zero and its maximum. Contrast this to other elevators that can only operate above a minimum speed, and some only at one speed.

  • The flow of your material through an Olds elevator is always smooth and steady, without the pulsations experienced with conventional vertical screw elevators and bucket elevators. This steady mode of flow is gentle to the product and further minimizes particle damage and dust generation.

  • The Olds elevator is also an intrinsically low-wear technology. This is due to the fact that the pressure of the product on the screw and casing is only due to the weight of what sits on each flight of the screw. Even on our largest elevators, this amounts to less than 2 PSI for a dense product like sand. Further, the low velocity of motion (less than 3 miles per hour linear speed max.) means there are no high-wear spots due to change of product direction.

  • This means that an Olds Elevator can be expected to run for years with no need for repair, and negligible maintenance costs!

About OLDS ELEVATOR™

Dissatisfied with conventional methods - bucket elevators, screw elevators, pneumatic conveyors and inclined belt conveyors - Peter developed a radical concept that overcomes all the obstacles of elevating sand in his foundry - using less than 5 sq. ft. of floor space!

Bucket Elevator

Bucket elevators are the most common method of mechanically elevating bulk granular materials at 90°. They are simply designed and occupy a minimal footprint. They operate by connecting buckets to a pair of chains or a belt that rides over a set of pulleys at the top and bottom of a vertical frame, much like an elongate ferris wheel. Buckets are filled from a chute that feeds material into the buckets near the bottom of the elevator as they move upward.

Bulk Material Handling Systems

When selecting a bulk material handling system for your needs consider all the features provided in a single OLDS ELEVATOR™. If the needs involve elevating and metering bulk material the simplicity of the OLDS ELEVATOR™ combines many features into a single operation. If the product is inherently dusty the OLDS ELEVATOR™ will not exacerbate the dusty condition. It elevates without moving any air other than the interstitial air between the particles moving in a flooded casing.

Combined Feeder / Elevator

These hoppers, in turn, must be filled by yet a third piece of equipment like a bucket elevator or pneumatic conveyor. The ability to take material from floor level and feed a process directly as a controlled volumetric feeder/elevator offers significant saving in cost, floor space, headroom and maintenance.

Dense Abrasives

Olds elevators are ideal for elevating dense, abrasive materials like Sand, Alumina Oxide, Tungsten Ore and Steel Shot without experiencing excessive wear.

Dust Control
Olds elevators control dust inherently. That is, its operating principle prevents the generation of dust during elevation.

Dust Explosion Prevention

OLDS ELEVATORST operate in a “flooded” mode where the rotating casing and screw are filled with the material being conveyed. There is insufficient oxygen in the system to support combustion in the unlikely event that a spark should occur.

Free Video Taped Test

OLDS ELEVATOR™ will videotape YOUR material or product being elevated!! That's right. We'll elevate your product on our in-house units and videotape the process. There's no cost for this service and no obligation in most cases.

Gravimetric Feeders

Gravimetric Feeders for bulk materials are used when the accuracy of the delivery rate must be controlled precisely by actually weighing the delivered material. Gravimetric feeders take over typically where volumetric feeders leave off. Common gravimetric feeders include: Loss-in-Weight feeders, Gain-in Weight feeders and Weigh-Belts.

Key Features

Use as a vertical volumetric feeder, reduced explosion risks, dust-free, silent operation, mobile units, flexible feed position and energy efficient just to name a few.

Materials Handled

A wide range of grain sizes and a wide range of bulk densities have been successfully elevated by the OLDS ELEVATOR™ Vertical Bulk Material Conveyor.

Mobile Units

Its small footprint and energy efficiency allow the OLDS ELEVATOR™ Vertical Bulk Material Conveyor* to be mounted on field, road and factory vehicles. Sandpiper™ mobile units can be configured with diesel generators with electric motors or hydraulic motors. Sandpiper™ mobile elevators are ideal for refilling railroad locomotive sandboxes with traction sand.

New Vertical Elevator Design: the OLDS ELEVATOR™

The new vertical elevator design has only one moving part in contact with the bulk material, a tubular casing with its attached in-feed scoops and delivery slinger, that rotates around a static screw. Generous clearance is provided between the static screw's diameter and the tube.

Case Studies

The problem was solved with an OLDS ELEVATOR™ vertical conveyor. Occupying less than 3 square feet of floor space, it delivers sand to the mixer's hopper as needed. A level switch in the hopper turns on the flow of sand from the OLDS ELEVATOR™ vertical conveyor when needed and shuts it off when the hopper is full.

Production Problems Solved By Combination Olds Elevator / Heat Exchanger

A chemical company that specializes in producing surfactants for industry had experienced chronic material handling problems with a popular flake surfactant product: Sodium Linear Alkyl Benzene Sulfonate (LAS). The LAS is produced by spray-drying a liquid formula over a hot drum dryer. The LAS exits the dryer as a flake at 110°F and is immediately elevated 20 feet for milling, screening and packaging.

New Sand Handling System from Olds Elevator Solves Chronic Problem for Brick Maker

One of the leading brick makers in North America contacted Olds Elevator LLC about developing a solution to a chronic production problem common throughout their brick plants.

Impressive Heat Exchanger for Hot Sand

Olds Elevator LLC of Hudson, NH and Palmer Mfg. and Supply Co. of Springfield OH collaborated on a series of trials using an Olds elevator as a heat exchanger for hot foundry sand by running tap water through the hollow shaft of the Olds elevator’s static screw. During normal elevation of hot sand, heat is extracted through the screw by running a stream of low-flow (2 gpm) tap water through the screw shaft.

OLDS ELEVATOR™ vs. Conventional Screw Elevators

With the obvious similarities between the OLDS ELEVATOR™ and vertical screw conveyors (both employ the use of screws and cylindrical casings) it is important to identify the differences in how they handle bulk materials. Screw conveyors are ubiquitous in the field of bulk material handling.

Radical Approach to the Vertical Conveyance of Bulk Materials

No leakage can take place at the base of the elevator, whereas bottom screw elevator seals are a notorious source of leakage and maintenance due to the proximity of the agitated product.

Performance Features

The OLDS ELEVATOR™ discharges a smooth, steady flow of product at any speed. Whether the flow rate is 5 lbs. per minute or 500 lbs. per minute the OLDS ELEVATOR™ delivers at a constant rate, without the pulsating discharge common to screw feeders. Variable speed motors and controllers allow the OLDS ELEVATOR™ to serve as an ideal volumetric feeder. Feed rate accuracy can be controlled to within 1% - 3% for most materials. The RPM of the casing dictates the flow rate of the elevator. Eliminate overhead storage hoppers and volumetric screw feeders. Let the OLDS ELEVATOR™ feed your process.

Pneumatic Conveying System

Pneumatic conveying has many advantages over mechanical conveying, namely the ability to convey vertically, horizontally, inclined and around corners with the same system. Disadvantages include high power consumption, wear of the conveying lines (particularly the elbows) and the need for air and dust handling systems at material discharge points.

Screw Conveying Systems

Screw conveyors are a common and very useful tool in the bulk material handling industry. Invented by Archimedes, more than 2,200 years ago, the screw conveyor has enjoyed a long history of industrial service. Screw conveyors operate at their peak performance when oriented in a horizontal position. They can be used on an incline to elevate material but their efficiency begins to decline the further away from 0° elevation the screw conveyor is inclined.

Screw Feeders

OLDS ELEVATORS™ are inherently Volumetric Feeders, even though they are vertically oriented. Since they operate in flooded mode they can be used as a volumetric feeder and exhibit accuracy rates equal to or greater than conventional horizontal screw feeders. An added benefit with the OLDS ELEVATOR™ is that it can be fed from the lowest possible level. There is no need to elevate material to fill the feed hopper. The OLDS ELEVATOR™ will elevate and volumetrically feed a process in a single operation.

Standard Configurations

Each OLDS ELEVATOR™ Vertical Bulk Material Conveyor* is built to the customer's requirements. Components can be constructed from a variety of materials, including stainless steel, to suit the application.

Vertical Bulk Material Conveyor Videos

The OLDS ELEVATOR™ utilizes a static screw and a rotating casing to gently elevate a broad spectrum of bulk granular and powdered materials. Shown here with soap powder the OLDS ELEVATOR™ is a highly accurate volumetric feeder as well (1% - 3% at 2 Sigma).

Vertical Conveyance of Bulk Materials

Word spread quickly and an OLDS ELEVATOR™ was soon working at the foundry of the Rice Propeller Co. in Mexico (figure 1). A second machine was employed locally for elevating of macadamia nuts (figure 2), another for lifting sand in Singapore (figure 3), and two larger machines installed at Bean Growers Australia, Kingaroy, followed by a further order for two more (figures 4, 5). OLDS ELEVATORST are now made under license and can be found working in USA, England, Mexico and Singapore with the key components supplied from Australia.

Volumetric Feeder, Heat Exchanger

The OLDS ELEVATOR™ is an important innovation that allows process engineers to use a single piece of mechanical equipment to elevate a broad spectrum of bulk materials at 90°, while simultaneously volumetrically feeding with a high degree of accuracy. In combination with the many convenient features of geometry and minimum maintenance requirements, the machine is expected to find many applications because it offers performance benefits and simplified equipment layouts.

Volumetric Feeders

An OLDS ELEVATOR™ can perform the same functions as a volumetric screw feeder while eliminating the need to elevate material to fill the feed hopper. The OLDS ELEVATOR™ simply takes the material from floor level, elevates and meters it directly into the process. One OLDS ELEVATOR™ does the job of two pieces of conventional equipment. And the accuracy of the OLDS ELEVATOR™ meets or exceeds that of conventional volumetric screw feeders.

Volumetric Feeding Accuracy

Early trials documenting the OLDS ELEVATOR™'s accuracy and repeatability as a volumetric feeder were conducted with silica sand. Although initial testing and measurement methods were relatively crude, the accuracy and repeatability of the flow rate control of the OLDS ELEVATOR™ was evident.
